Talk of the town.. CAA-Citizenship(Amendment) act 2019
CAA- Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019.. as simple as that..
Let's think of a place affected by drought...People suffer for a living(refugees from Bangladesh, pak, Afghanistan, Srilanka, Nepal, Bhutan..etc ) and are in search of safe drinking water ( or rather breathing space)..
They heard of a nearby house (india) where there is a well with unfailing water supply...They queued up for water. The number increased day by day..The owner of the house had a condition that they should fill in water in the pots provided by him..(an eligible document for NRC- National register for citizenship)..
Years went by ..People of this joint family started worrying that they may run short of water and culture of them would be ruined by the continuing presence of outsiders ...Then they persuaded the head of the family, to allow those who have been taking water from so and so date, need only to be permitted...(Assam accord 1985 and and the promise made in that for NRC to identify and deport foreigners-The date set was march 25, 1971 for assam and 1951 for other states)..Head of family(congress govt) out of compassion or fear or whatever didn't adhere to it strictly...So it went on like earlier and the condition worsened..
As the head of the family died and when a new generation successor(BJP govt) came, family members pushed for their demands to implement exclusion vehemently( Identify and deport foreigners based on NRC)
But later when they realised that many of their well wishers won't make it to the well, they did not proceed(around 1.9 million not included in the NRC list published in 2019, majority of them Bangladeshi hindus)..Problem continued...
Then they decided to alter the age old custom(citizenship act 1955) to include some, whom they felt are in dire need of water(Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, jains, parsis and christians-religious minorities- from muslim countries of PAk, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who entered India by 31st Dec 2014 and also relaxed the so called 11 years of acquaintance to just 5 years.)-Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019
Though all wanted water, head of the family only spoke for a few of them..Rest (Muslims, Srilankan refugees, Tamil speaking hindus, Tibetan refugees from China also Inner Line Permit Regime-arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Misoram etc) can't get water even if they were first in the queue !! All are thirsty, but a few are allowed..
It's readers call to judge if it's a discrimination....It's as simple as that..
I am humble to invite corrections, suggestions and criticism and I am unbiased..
